History

Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director and resident choreographer Rain Ross, Lehua Dance Theatre has evolved into one of the leading companies in the Seattle modern dance scene. LDT was started for what was originally conceived as a one time event, but the overwhelming enthusiasm from both dancers and audience members has kept LDT growing and expanding into what it is today.

LDT's strong technical base has attracted nationally acclaimed choreographers Wade Madsen, Jason Ohlberg, Hannah Wiley, and Deborah Wolf to set new and revived works on the company. Other notable choreographers include former principal ballerina Stephanie Saland and local Seattle choreographer Karena Hatfield-Grytting. LDT has also built relationships with visual artists, including metal sculptor Solia Hermes, wood artist Cecil Ross, and photographer Cassie Redstone.

One of LDT's biggest honors came in 2005 when the company was invited to perform at the opening of the Isamu Noguchi exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. Other performing venues include Broadway Performance Hall and Velocity MainSpace Theater in Seattle, and Bainbridge Performing Arts Playhouse on Bainbridge Island, as well as site specific venues such as the Gallery Fraga on Bainbridge Island.

Currently in its 6th season, LDT will continue to present quality work in a professional setting with upcoming performances in both Seattle (March '07) and on Bainbridge Island (January '07). Funding has come from a number of sources including Art Patch, Mount Holyoke College, Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council, generous patrons, and in-kind donations. LDT gratefully thanks the generosity of these gifts which allow the company to continue creating and presenting dance of the highest caliber.

Mission

Lehua Dance Theatre strives to present quality performances of a continually developing, multi-layered, and engaging repertoire. The company aims to provide performance opportunities for talented professional dancers, to give choreographers the chance to work with a strong and passionate group of dancers, and to engage and enrich the community through these live performances. Through the beauty and intention of the works presented, Lehua Dance Theatre hopes to challenge the notions of what is expected in art today.
